The Next New Thing

How many people each day has to spend time in advisement center during this week registration to get an appointment? how much time did we waste on just waiting for them to call our name? Isn't frustrating?

At the same time, we can use that time to do other things like doing homework, assignment,project etc. Did you ever wonder if we can wait for our appointment while doing our assignment? Or eat our breakfast/brunch/lunch, whatever you called it because I know you guys don't have the time and skipped breakfast many times,well at least I do.

I think one idea that will be useful for us as student in new media is if there is a virtual advisement center (Second Life atmosphere). In this situation, students can have online meeting with the advisor using live 3D chat or  voice chat feature. However, this has to be limited to Baruch students only. Counselor can guide students to do certain things online like permission to register for class,add wish lists,eligibility requirement,etc. Therefore, students donot need to go back over and over for the same problem just because they are certain requirements needs to be done through internet. It will save up a lot of time for us as a student to do advisement regardless of the location.This also good for students that work 9-5 job because they can have virtual appointment with the counselor during their lunch break. It is also save time for the counselor because even though they stayed in their office but they still can help students. I believe this is most likely to benefit everybody in the educational department.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

So far, i haven't add anything to our class wiki but I am working on it. I am reading more about fashion in NY Times, Yahoo News, and other online media that covered story about fashion in terms of new media. I've been talking to people that are really interested in fashion to see if fashion have found anything to benefit from new media nowadays. Right now, I am working on my research to be more in depth so that I can find interesting things about fashion in new media world.

About My Term Research Project

My topic for research is "Effects of Second Life on Society". The reason why I chose this topic is because virtual world are getting popular in today's life. The research I did was mostly from google scholar and Baruch's library website which is Newman library. Research can be very tricky at times. But, you need to have the right key word to look for the right articles to support your arguments. Despite its disadvantages, I found out that there are a lot advantages we can get from virtual world like second life. I have learned that we can use it for our advantages to a better quality of life. In conclusion, I found out that virtual world can benefit people as long as they know how to use it to it's fullest advantageous, not for bad purposes. I believe that my paper can open people's mind about new media because in the end, virtual world does help advanced society.

Privacy and Confidentiality

New media can increase the risk of exploitation of privacy and confidentiality because many users put their sensitive information on the new media such as Facebook, Twitter, blog etc. Since the new media is public, some users don't realize that they are posting that information to the world. Information such as your address, date of birth, workplace, credit card numbers etc can let hackers figure out their confidential records such Social Security numbers, account number and so on. Update status in Facebook can also attract people to invade others privacy because they know where they go, what they do, what time they are home or not home etc. Therefore, users need to be careful who they are friends with on their account.

New media has great link to invasion of privacy and confidentiality on a person However, it is up to that person what information they should put or don't put in their account to decrease the risk of their privacy and confidential information being crossed by unresponsible people.

Advice for Baruch College

One of the advice that I want to give Baruch is they need to create a forum page for student's advice using new media such as Blog, Facebook or Twitter as the medium. Also, Baruch can also create a webpage on their website that can allow students to post their advice through their facebook, twitter or blogger account. It is very convenience because they can post their advice at anytime and anywhere they are. I believe that Baruch can improve their quality by listening to our advice as a student.

The Social Network

 

First of all, I wanted to say thank to Prof. Adler because I had a reason to can drag my boyfriend to watch this movie :]

I was a little bit lost in the first half of the movie because i am not familiar with codes etc. So, my boyfriend is trying to explain to me all those codes Mark Z was talking about.(He's Network Security Major). The only part I understood was the first scene where he broke up with his girlfriend. I felt like he doesn't know how to talk to a girl at all. However, i was able to follow in the middle of the movie. I actually thought Justin Timberlake won't be as good as he is as Sean Parker. But, he actually played really well. I was drawn to hate him like he is trying to ruin my life as well. I was so mad at him especially after Eduardo had to sign another agreement for his share. It was funny when Eduardo was trying to punch Sean, Sean face was hilarious.  Also, the former Disney girl played really well as obsessive girlfriend.

Throughout the movie, Mark Z received to lawsuit, from the Winklevoss Twins and his former best friend Eduardo. A junior lawyer came up to Mark Z and told him that they will settle with Eduardo and the Winklevoss Twins. The film ends with Mark sent a friend request to his former girlfriend Erica(the one he called her a B****) on Facebook, and then keep refreshing the page every few seconds waiting for her response. I felt really bad, not only he loss a girlfriend that he probably in love but he also lost hiss best friend. At that time, i felt that he was really lonely. It made me wonder, is it really worth it to be successful and have all those money if you are not happy?
